Scrap Basket Mystery Step 1

So here we go...
I'm going to keep the clue hidden behind a jump break so if you don't want to see the clue yet, you don't have to. To see the clue, just click on the words "show me the clue" and it should appear.

There will be a quick description of each step and a suggested technique, but feel free to use whatever tools and techniques you want. The usual stuff applies, unless otherwise noted:

  • All seam allowances are 1/4"
  • Fabrics are sewn right sides together
  • Use a neutral thread and 10-12 stitches per inch.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions if something doesn't make sense. The instructions can also be found in a PDF file at The Crafty Unicorn Classes

The short clue:
Make 96 half square triangles that are 2-3/4" UNFINISHED using the lights and the accent fabric.

The detailed clue:
This is a good time to try the 8-at-a-time method if you haven't already.

You need to cut twelve 6-1/2" squares of light and twelve 6-1/2" squares of accent fabric.

Fold each 6 ½” light square in quarters and press or mark the center of each side.

Draw lines to connect the points.

Draw a line ¼” on each side of the drawn diagonal lines (Or use the Quick-cut ruler)

Layer the light square with an accent square, right sides together. Sew on the dotted lines.

If you pivot at the corners you can do it all in two continuous rounds.

Cut on the all solid lines.

Press your half-square triangles (HST) open with the seam allowance toward the accent fabric. Square-up to 2 ¾” and place in a bag labeled Step #1.

I think it takes longer to type it than it does to do it *smile*. So have fun and the next step will be next Thursday.

Don't tell me not to burn the candle at both ends
Tell me where to get more wax!
